Annual Schedule Matrix (High School Program)

Two years ago, I designed this schedule matrix (bottom of this post) for our high school program. The matrix was not only used for organizational purposes, but it was used to hold myself accountable for ensuring we were properly investing in our players throughout the year. During the course of a season, it is easier than coaches will admit to get thrown off course. We find ourselves justifying why we aren't doing activities that we had told ourselves we were going to do (like lifting two-days per week in-season).

Notice the bottom of the matrix has a six-week breakdown to help with planning purposes.

The matrix is broken up into the following organizational periods:

  1. Transition

    1. First 3 weeks of August

    2. Post-AAU wrap-up | start of school | fall sports begin

  2. Pre-Season

    1. Coaching clinics

    2. Team outings

    3. Strength training

    4. Player development

    5. Leadership development

  3. In-Season

    1. The "grind"

    2. Practices and games

    3. Maintenance lifting and active recoveries

    4. Supplemental shooting workouts

  4. Post-Season

    1. Tournament play

    2. Stay healthy

  5. Off-Season 1

    1. Decompress | Spring break

    2. Begin foundational strength training

    3. Rehab nagging injuries from the season

    4. Leadership development

  6. Live Period

    1. Live competitions per state association bylaws

    2. Summer League

    3. Team camps

    4. NCAA scholastic events

    5. Play rather than practice

  7. Off-Season 2

    1. Dead period per state association bylaws

    2. AAU tournaments

    3. Strength training during the week (AAU on weekends)

    4. Coaches chill

below is a downloadable .pdf of the matrix we used in 2021-22.
