The 5 W's of Halftime

This is a halftime analytical strategy from Doc Rivers. The 5 W's are mainly rooted in a defensive framework. I think you can use the 5 W's to analyze your offensive performance in the first half, but I don't know if I could make enough time for that.

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY

WHO is hurting you (or surprisingly not hurting you) so far in a game? This is a personnel matter. Think match-ups. Think personnel tendencies and whether you are taking those away from your opponent's best players.

WHAT kind of action is hurting you? In one game earlier this season, we struggled to guard a high flat ball screen where the biggest, strongest player was the ballhandler and was really getting down hill against any ball screen defense we employed. To that point, we were changing our ball screen defense on the fly during the first half, but slowed down and deliberately reinforced our ball screen defensive scheme at halftime. We were better in the second half.

WHEN is your opponent hurting you? Are they hurting you early in their offensive possession (transition) or are they running deliberate action for :25 and beating you after several defensive rotations? Are they hurting you on dead ball action (ATO's, SOB, OBU, etc.)? Is your opponent hurting you only when a certain player gets the ball?

WHERE are you getting hurt? Is your post defense needing adjustments, such as a double team? Are you rotating poorly on the back-end of your press? Are you giving up corner threes in your zone?

WHY are you behind or ahead? This is the most important W in my mind. Have three reasons why you are behind, or why you are ahead. Those should be the same three points that you adjust to or reaffirm when you speak to your team at halftime.
